Hardware requirements:

Virtualization or VT must be enabled in bios and your processor must support it. AMD/Intel VT support list

A router or network that assigns dynamic IP addresses.

640 megabytes of ram for each VM instance.

Step 1 Go to http://www.vmware.com/download/player/ and download the latest version. BTW you'll have to register to download.

Click download.

Then this screen is next requiring you to register.

Choose the home/personal use options. Once registered you'll be allowed to download.

Step 2 Go to http://reilly.homeip.net/folding/vm.html and download the virtual machine.

Step 3 Install VM Player from step one. After install restart computer as required.

Step 4 Extract the folding appliance.In my picture I just extract to desktop. You can extract to wherever you'd prefer.

If you are using a dual core then you'll only need to extract once. If using a quad then rename the extracted folder and extract another instance. I renamed both of my extracted folders like shown.

Step 5 At this point you can assign your VM instances to specific cores by editing the folding.vmx file with notepad.

  • hint* do not set notepad as default program for .vmx files, or you'll have troubles later.

Add the following lines to the bottom of the folding.vmx file:

For a quad-core cpu, to run two instances of VM, add the following for the first instance:

priority.ungrabbed = "idle"

processor0.use = "TRUE"

processor1.use = "TRUE"

processor2.use = "FALSE"

processor3.use = "FALSE"

And for the second instance:

priority.ungrabbed = "idle"

processor0.use = "FALSE"

processor1.use = "FALSE"

processor2.use = "TRUE"

processor3.use = "TRUE"

Open the extracted folder and doubleclick the bottom file.

This will open the VMPlayer and start the virtual machine. And will bring you to this screen.

Note the hostname listed in the format fold-xxxx This will be your easiest way to keep tabs on your folding instances.

If you do not get to the login prompt because the VM has network problems or cannot get an IP, try changing the network to be NATted:

File:VMNAT.jpg

Once you login, the computer is folding and should be reflected in cpu usage. Now to configure. Type the hostname (http://fold-xxxx), as noted earlier, in your web browser. You should see this if everything is running correctly.

File:diskless.jpg

Click Reconfigure then you'll see this screen.

File:recon.jpg

After configuring to your liking click reconfigure at the bottom. The instance will have to be restarted in order for the changes to take affect. You will want to change your user name and team number from this page.

Now go back to the VM Player as it now needs to be restarted for the changes to take effect.

File:restart.jpg

Click VMPlayer>Troubleshoot>Reset.

Now its running and configured. Wasnt so hard even with my lack of skill explaining. If on a Quad and you extracted two folders then do the same setup as the first.

To monitor with FAHMON or Fahspy simply point either monitoring app to \\fold-xxxx\c\etc\folding\1\

where xxxx is the alphanumeric code obtained from step 5.
